Do not take trazodone if you
Are allergic to ingredients of Desyrel (Trazodone) 100mg 30 tablets by Angelini
Signs of an allergic reaction e.g. rash swallowing breathing problems rash on tongue, face lips and throat or recently had heart attack
Thoughts of suicide and worsening of depression and anxiety
Check with your doctor if you have had seizures, severe kidney/liver problems, heart problems, pregnant(trying to become pregnant and breastfeeding),overactive thyroid gland, narrow angle glaucoma(eye disorder),needing to urinate frequently, schizophrenia mental disorders and are taking buprenorphine ( strong painkiller). The use of buprenorphine with trazodone can lead to serotonin syndrome(potentially life-threatening condition).
Other medicines and trazadone. Check with your doctor as trazadone can affect the ways other medicines work
Driving & using machines-trazadone can make you fell dizzy and sleepy
Trazodone contains lactose-check with your doctor as your body may have intolerances to some sugars
Avoid taking Desyrel with alcohol/food/drink
Tell doctor before taking anaesthetics
Tell your doctor if you have taken MAOI (MonoAmine Oxidase Inhibitors)
medicines such as tranylcypromine, phenelzine and isocarboxazid (for depression) or selegiline (for Parkinson’s disease), or have taken them in the last 2 weeks
or any other antidepressants
How to take trazodone
This is an oral tablet
Swallow the capsule whole with drink/water.
Take with or without food
If you are told to take only once a day take it before you go to bed
If the dose is too strong change the dosage or ask you doctor
If you forget to take Desyrel take it as soon as you remember it
When it is nearly time for the next dose skip the missed dose
Don’t take a double dose
When you stop taking trazodone you should tell your doctor
Your doctor will help you gradually stop taking the tablets
still take the tablet when you feel well
Possible side effects
Report any side effects to your doctor
Stop taking trazodone and see doctor immediately if
You get swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, face, lips or throat which could cause difficulty swallowing or breathing, itching of the skin and nettle rash. This may mean you are having an allergic reaction to trazodone
Painful erection of penis which will not go away
Yellowing of eyes and skin could be a liver problem e.g. jaundice
More infectious/more bruising than usual due to blood disorder
Have more severe abdominal pain and bloating and experience vomiting and constipation
Signs of your intestine not working properly
Talk to your doctor if you experience these side effects
Suicidal thoughts
- Feeling tired, faint, dizzy, having pale skin.
These could be signs of anaemia
- Convulsions/fits
- Unusual skin sensations such as numbness,
tingling, pricking, burning or creeping on the
skin (parasthesia)
- Feeling confused, restless, sweating,shaking, shivering, hallucinations (strange visions or sounds), sudden jerks of the muscles or a fast heartbeat, you may have something called Serotonin syndrome.
- Feeling very unwell, possibly with shortness of breath (dyspnoea), difficulty in walking
or walking with a shuffling gait, shaking, uncontrolled muscle twitching and a high temperature (above 38°C).this could be a rare condition known as
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome.
- Rapid, slow or irregular heartbeat.
